Don't make it items. Please, please, please don't. Items should be rare in-game and making items purchasable would absolutely break down that system. It would also be especially horrible for the thing because after the thing plays around a situation for the sole purpose of expending all of a marine's grenades (as a thing will commonly do), the thing would find all that time wasted because the marine could quickly and easily purchase 4 more.
I think the obvious and most common answer you will get for this is marine/thing skins, which isn't a bad idea at all. The points should be used to purchase aesthetic items only. Allowing marines to purchase anything that could directly effect game-play would risk breaking down the game as a whole, as I previously mentioned.
If anything look at the game 'murder.' That game does an amazing job at using a point system to purchase a variety of items that do nothing to directly influence game play. Items like skins, 'yelps' (similar to the roar for thing), etc.
IF you really want to do this thoroughly you could develop different types of marine classes and thing classes and make those purchasable as well. New players could only use the aberration for being thing but could later purchase a 'hydralisk thing' or 'ultra thing' with his/her Vicpoints. Similarly a player could use his points to purchase a ghost, firebat, reaper, or marauder 'marine' classes. (or some other idea(s) like this)
Lately the game has become very stagnate so changes like the map updates you just implemented and like what I/other players have suggested will really help push that game to a better place, or breath new life into it as LostHope says. I mean the last update alone, and the first major update we have had in awhile, noticeably boosted the popularity of the game. The same should continue if we can keep getting more big updates to the the game like that of the one we just saw.
Anyway, just a thought. Hope this helps.
